We are seeking to recruit a Knowledge Management Associate to manage and execute legal content projects, training and knowledge initiatives in keeping with the firm’s strategy. The position holder shall be charged with the responsibility of providing quality & updated knowledge material and making it easily available to lawyers.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Statutes: Provide updates on legislative changes, legal notices, Kenya Gazette Notices, tracking bills in Parliament and updating amendments to the Acts;
  • News Reports: Reading and sharing the latest relevant information in legal and public media including newspapers and publications and identifying opportunities therein;
  • Updates on Cases: Reading the latest case-law and jurisprudence in areas relevant to the firm’s practice areas with the aim of tracking developments and sharing updates;
  • Collaboration: Participate in the Knowledge Management initiatives with counterparts at DLA Piper Africa, ensuring that these are embraced at the firm level;
  • Precedents: Develop new content of a high standard, technically and editorially, including precedents, practical guidance notes, checklists and house style; 
  • Quality Control: Ensure overall coordination, oversight and quality control of all knowledge management resources;
  • Create Awareness: Understand and share industry/commercial knowhow and optimize opportunities for knowledge creation, updates, alerts, articles, journals, newsletters. Monitor and identify trends that translate into impact. Understand the core practice sectors and role of Practice Group Leads;
  • Lawyers Requests: Assist with and be a sounding board, trusted advisor and researcher on legal issues. Devise systems for capturing and analyzing queries and identifying/addressing knowledge gaps;
  • Know-how Development: Devise and implement strategy on know-how across practice groups. Follow best practice and develop knowledge initiatives; 
  • Training: Devise a training program linked to the firm’s business strategy and identify opportunities in media/other avenues and coordinate with the Business Development team. Link training to broader firm training initiatives;
  • Client-facing Knowledge: Set agenda for thought leadership aligned to the firm strategy. Identify ways to structure work and work outputs to produce tangible products including training for lawyers and clients. Developing and participating in client-facing training. Writing, updating and tracing material for internal/external training;
  • Policy Initiatives and Capacity Building: Work with lawyers and policy initiatives, including offering training and knowledge sharing sessions/platforms; opening and maintaining good channels for dialogue and collaboration within and outside the firm;
  • Library: Manage record and update all material in the Library. Prepare, maintain and update the library handbook, ensure materials are updated and in line with the latest literature available; 
  • Book Purchases: Handle requests for book purchases and ensure acquisition at competitive prices; keep track of the latest literature in the practice areas of interest to the firm;
  • Promote an integrated team: Implement and influence knowledge culture throughout the firm in the identified practice areas and for wider benefit;
  • Operations and innovation: Redefine the knowledge services/best practices and promote this among all lawyers in the firm. Promote innovative, quality focused mind set and challenge the team to consider how to deliver more effective and efficient service. Promote greater use of the DLA Piper offshore resources, use of project managers and technology to manage costs and improve efficiency;
  • Systems: Act as an internal champion for knowledge systems, ensuring engagement with lawyers. Identify and implement knowledge system changes (technological and behavioral) to better deliver legal content;
  • Strategy, alignment & integration: Build and implement a firm wide comprehensive knowledge plan. Align the knowledge plan with business strategy. Create a single joint community of fee earning lawyers, knowledge lawyers and other knowledge and business professionals within the firm, regionally and globally. Emphasize and promote cross-practice and cross border group nature and collaboration.

Candidate Specification

The ideal candidate should hold the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB)
  • At least 4 years’ experience within a similar role either in a law firm or a professional services firm
  • Experience working directly with senior counterparts on strategy and execution
