Chrysostom Akhaabi represents clients in commercial dispute resolution work and has assisted in handling a number of complex arbitration and litigation disputes involving multinationals, government and its agencies, local companies and individual private clients, locally and internationally.

He practices in all aspects of commercial litigation and arbitration and public law matters including: banking law, debt collection, insurance, intellectual property, public procurement, competition and antitrust, constitution and judicial review, election petitions, tax, defamation, and land matters.

Experience has included advising:

  • Successfully representing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission both at the election court and the court of appeal in a high-stakes petition challenging the election of a Kenyan county governor
  • Successfully representing a well-known telecommunications company in Kenya at the court of appeal in a dispute involving the correct amount of pension contribution payable by the company to a pension scheme
  • Was involved in representing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission and its chairman in defending the conduct of the presidential elections held on 8 August 2017
  • Was involved in successfully representing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission in a matter challenging the award of the tender on procurement of ballot papers and election material
  • Successfully representing various companies in debt collection claims and claims for breach of contractual obligations
  • Successfully represented three leading lenders in defending their right to exercise their statutory power of sale under the charge (mortgage) instruments
  • Representing two private companies in challenging the constitutionality of gazette notices issued by local authorities improperly revoking and taking possession of title to their properties without compensation
  • Defended various local banks in disputes filed by customers arising from their banker-customer relationship
  • Prosecuted and defended various disputes arising from agreements entered into among the parties
  • Representing several leading insurance companies in respect of a range of claims, including the defense of industrial accidents, road traffic accident claims, material damage claims and outlay recovery
