DLA Piper Africa office in Uganda appoints James Mukasa Sebugenyi as new Managing Partner

DLA Piper Africa’s Uganda office (S&L Advocates) has announced the appointment of Mr James Mukasa Sebugenyi as Managing Partner of the firm effective 1 January 2026.  James succeeds Barnabas Tumusingize who served as Managing Partner for 19 years and was instrumental in the transformational growth and reputation of the firm.

James led the firm's  Dispute Resolution Practice from 2010 to 2025 and has extensive litigation experience spanning commercial contracts, real estate, product liability, constitutional law, property fraud, telecommunications, energy, expropriated properties, utilities, employee benefits and aviation negligence.

Drawing on his governance expertise, James holds multiple executive leadership roles in Uganda, including serving as a board chair and governance committee lead. He is a Past President of the Uganda Law Society (2011–2013) and previously served on the Law Council (2010–2013), the national regulator of legal practice, as well as the Management Committee of the Law Development Centre (2014–2016), Uganda’s postgraduate bar training institution.
