Media, Sport and Entertainment

The media sector encompasses print, electronic and digital platforms. Each is prone to industry-specific legal issues.

IKM advises on all legal issues related to the media sector, including defending media houses against libel and slander, assessing the legal implications of programs and projects rolled out by the media, cross-border listings, setting up of new divisions, intellectual property protection and enforcement, regulatory issues, and rights and licensing.

Experience has included advising:

  • Nation Media Group, the largest independent media house in East and Central Africa in the cross-listing of its shares on the Rwanda over-the-counter (OTC) market, Uganda Stock Exchange, and Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange
  • Nation Media Group Limited, Mediamax Limited and Royal Media Services Limited, in lawsuits against them for the remittance of royalties to collective management organizations
  • Nation Media Group Limited in a libel suit at the high court. The Media house was being accused of defaming a bank and its managing director
  • Nation Media Group Limited in various appeals at the high court where the media house was being accused of defaming three of the country’s high-ranking politicians
