GENI & KEBE hosts a master class on investment arbitration in Africa

Par Mouhamed Kebe

GENI & KEBE co-hosted a two-day Master Class with the Institut Superieur de Management (ISM) School of Law, titled “Investment Arbitration in Africa: Challenges and Perspectives”. The Master Class was held at the Good Rade Hotel in Dakar, Senegal on 11-12 May 2018.

“Arbitration is being used more and more in Africa to settle investment disputes,” explains GENI & KEBE Managing Partner, Mouhamed Kebe, who is a chartered arbitrator with the OHADA Court of Arbitration, a member of the Arbitration Court of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

“To participate in the arbitration process effectively, it is crucial to understand the opportunities and challenges that exist when electing to use any of the different investment arbitration options available.”

The opening ceremony of the Master Class was attended by the Senegalese Minister of Justice, Professor Ismaïla Madior Fall. Participants engaged in a lively discussion that encompassed many different perspectives on investment arbitration in Africa. This included information about the OHADA Court of Arbitration (OHADA is the system of shared business laws and implementing institutions – including a court of arbitration – shared by 17 countries in West and Central Africa), as well as the use of other investment arbitrations such as the ICC and International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), in the African context.
