Experience

  • Minimum of 3–5 years Post-Qualification Experience (PQE) in a law firm, with significant exposure to commercial litigation, arbitration, mediation, debt recovery, employment disputes, and other dispute resolution matters during this period is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in drafting and reviewing pleadings, court processes, legal opinions, settlement agreements, and other dispute-related documentation, as well as conducting legal research and providing practical legal advice.
  • Proven experience managing dispute matters, including court attendance, case preparation, client engagement, negotiations, and interactions with regulatory bodies, courts, tribunals, and other relevant stakeholders.

Job Purpose

The Associate will support the Firm's Dispute Resolution Practice Group by providing legal and advisory services in relation to commercial litigation, arbitration, mediation, regulatory disputes, employment disputes, debt recovery matters, and other contentious proceedings.  The role involves assisting with dispute strategy, legal research, drafting court and arbitration documents, case management, client advisory, and representation before courts, tribunals, and alternative dispute resolution forums. The Associate will support senior lawyers in delivering effective, commercially practical, and client-focused dispute resolution solutions while contributing to the overall growth and effectiveness of the Practice Group.

Knowledge Needs

The ideal candidate should ideally possess a combination of the following competencies, including but not limited to:

  • Working knowledge of Nigerian civil and commercial litigation procedures, including proceedings before superior courts of record, specialised tribunals, and regulatory adjudicatory bodies.
  • Good understanding of arbitration, mediation, negotiation, and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, including applicable institutional and procedural rules.
  • Knowledge of contract law, corporate and commercial disputes, employment disputes, debt recovery, regulatory enforcement matters, and other dispute resolution practice areas.
  • Familiarity with relevant court rules, procedural requirements, evidence law, and enforcement processes.
  • Ability to conduct thorough legal research and apply legal principles to complex factual scenarios.
  • Ability to develop practical, commercially sound, and client-focused dispute resolution strategies.
  • Understanding of dispute risk assessment, case management principles, and litigation support processes.
  • Ability to work effectively within litigation teams while maintaining high standards of professionalism, ethics, and client service.
