Animation Symposium Lecture

Olajide Oyewole LLP (a member of DLA Piper Africa) Partner, Sandra Oyewole making a presentation titled 'Chain of Title and the Practical Uses of Rights' at the Animation Symposium Lagos Lecture organized by Institut français du Nigeria in Lagos.

In Sandra Oyewole's presentation, she said "The chain of title is what proves to the distributor that the filmmaker owns the film. It is the chain of title that will enable the distributor obtain the relevant insurance i.e. the Errors and Omissions Insurance".  In Nigeria, chain of title is not considered as necessarily critical as in the US & UK. The Nigerian film industry is quite informal and films are financed and distributed everyday with almost no documentation. This has affected overseas distribution and potential investment.  She also mentioned that with worldwide attention on the Nigerian film industry Nigerian filmmakers are encouraged to develop a good understanding of the copyright laws and begin to secure chain of title contracts for their films.
